San Miguelada or "Pamplonada"

Every September, San Miguel de Allende is host to an event that can only be compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Spring Break in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Begun in 1973, San Miguel de Allende's Pamplonada (named after Pamplona, Spain, where the running of the bulls originated), it is also known as the Sanmiguelada, and is usually the held the third Saturday of September, on the weekend falling between the celebration of Mexico's Independence Day, El Grito, (September 16th) and the festival for the city's patron saint, San Miguel el Arcángel (September 29th). The annual event attracts more than 20,000 participants from all over Mexico, and the world, for what is a weekend-long party of drinking and danger.

San Miguel de Allende International Chamber Music Festival

International Chamber Music Festival San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, July 31 to August 17.
The second most important international music festival in Mexico features award-winning international ensembles, guest musicians and local artists. This year's line-up includes the Miami String Quartet and the Ahn Trio.Web Site:International Chamber Music Festival

The Festival de Música de Cámara de San Miguel de Allende, one of the most renowned in Mexico and Latin America, was founded in 1979 by a group of Mexicans and foreign residents with the idea of establishing a chamber music festival – based on the internationally famous festivals of Spoleto, Edinburgh and Marlboro – in their own city

The Festival’s essential “raison d’etre” is educational, and thus every year we have offered young, advanced-level students from all over Mexico the opportunity to attend and participate in workshops and master classes, which take place during the two weeks of concerts. These workshops and classes are given by the quartet-in-residence that participates annually in the Festival, as well as the performing groups. To date, more than 1,000 students have participated in our Student Program. In 2007, 183 hours of classes were given and quartet-in-residence, La Catrina String Quartet, received unanimously positive evaluations from the students. We are bringing La Catrina back to San Miguel de Allende for our 2008 season. During thirty years of effort, hard work and dedication - all for the love of music - we have enjoyed world-class artists from three continents. What was only a dream in 1979, has been made reality by the Festival de Música de Cámara – it is now firmly established and is known as unique in its genre in Mexico, as well as important on an international level, and draws more than 7,000 attendees every year.

Day of the Dead in Oaxaca

On the 2 of November the people of Mexico celebrate the Day of the Dead. During the day schools hold special ceremonies and build altars outside their houses. On the night of 2 of November families go to their local cemetery to remember their loved ones. They build altars on the tombs of the dead. On top of the tombs they lay a carpet of flowers and candles. They take seasonal fruits, cakes and a special bread called Pan de Muerto which families bake especially for this feast. Families and friends share special drinks and food during an all night vigil, surrounded by the light of the candles and the memory of their loved ones.

Day of the Dead in Oaxaca In the firsts days of November the smell of incense perfumes most of Oaxaca, the Day of the Dead is celebrated. The festivities of the Day of the Dead, also known as All Saints, are among the most important celebrated during the religious calendar, specially in the rural communities. The origins of the Day of the Dead come from the very human need for transcendence after death, which has preoccupied all human groups. The denial of total disappearance has permitted the development of mythical ideas of the world of the dead. The Day of the Dead starts on October 31st. In the market families buy flowers, incense, candles, food and other items with which they construct their Altars and make their offerings. These altars are usually built on top of the table, covered with a white table cloth or decorative tissue paper, this is where the offerings are made.

Ravello Music Festival

Ravello Music Festival
The Ravello Music Festival is something not to be missed if at all possible. A classical music programme starts in March until October with the highlight, the Ravello music Festival, in July.
About Ravello
Not only do world class performers and orchestra’s play at this event, but the scenery surrounding the venue (the gardens of Villa Rufolo) are spectacular. Since 1952, this ethereal setting and atmosphere has inspired many, including Robert Wagner and continues to bewitch visitors each year. This is, in fact, is one of the oldest music festivals in Italy, after perhaps the May music festival in Florence.
The Ravello Concert Society organises the season, with performance changing every year, from classical music and chamber orchestra, to Opera and Jazz, there is something for everyone. The society’s website has all the dates and events, and you can buy tickets online.
Concerts are also held in the Romanesque Cathedral, which has a 18th century facade and bronze doors by Barisano da Trani (1179). Of interest inside there is the pulpit by Niccolò da Foggia (1272) and a small ambo (1130).

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Festival

Basil''s Bar is legendary for parties, for it welcomes everyone, and with a vibe that transends stature or position in life, sailors party with business moguls, high fashion models, gardeners, rocks stars and school teachers. Basil''s Bar is a leveler, whose mantra is to live in the moment as Basil does and enjoy the wonders of life.

The spirit of Basil''s Bar has always been, ''Why not have fun?''. The answer to that question is, to have fun, be yourself and just do it!That is how the Blues Festival was born more than ten years ago. An old friend of Basil''s, London blues singer Dana Gillespie, was visiting Basil on Mustique. It was Jump Up night and as the reggae band played on, Dana was inspired to sing. It was clear that blues sung with Reggae did not work, so she sang accapella. the crowd loved the blues, and with her final encore, Dana promised Basil a full on blues festival, if he would only get a proper piano.

The festival next Mustique Blues Festival will be held January 21 till February 4 2009. Appearing in 2008 were: Ronnie Jones, Zach Prather, Dana Gillespie, Papa George, Steve Simpson. and the London Blues Band: Julien Brunetaud. Dino Baptiste. Jake Zaitz, Jeff Walker, Mike Paice, Darby Todd, and Enrico Morena. Our special Guest: Felix Dennis. The 2008 CD is in production and will be available on Basil''s web site later this year.

St Bart’s Music Festival From January 8-22, the St Bart’s Music Festival kicks off, showcasing various genres, from classical to jazz. The festival is being marketed as opportunity to relax, take in the sites during the day, and get ready for nights of music and dancing. Located in the French West Indies, St. Bart’s makes for a relaxing holiday with its beautiful beaches (at least fourteen are not crowded, even in peak season), quaint villages, and restaurants. St. Barts is a popular destination for many Lesser Antilles travelers with its definite French feeling. You can stay at luxurious, private villas, take the ferry from St. Maarten to St Barts, and sample cuisine from high-end French restaurants.
Our 2009 Festival on the island runs for two weeks, from January 8 through January 22, 2009. Advanced tickets to performances are not necessary, just come to the island and pay at the door — the old-fashioned way!

St Lucia Jazz Festival

St. Lucia Jazz has become one of the major events on St. Lucia’s calendar of events. During the month of May, the island moves to the beat of jazz when music fills the air and tourism takes on a whole new meaning to all. What started as simply a marketing event to boost tourism industry arrivals during a low peak period, has now developed into a truly St. Lucian Festival. The month of May is fast approaching and St. Lucia continues to draw attention to the whole world through this celebration of jazz music. In 1999, the St. Lucia Jazz took on a new dimension with the addition of more side attractions, i.e. other jazz performances aside from main stage events. These additions have been affectionately called “The Fringe Activities”. This created a more festive atmosphere and allowed the local St. Lucian public and visitors to participate in these events free-of-charge. St. Lucia Jazz also extends to the South of the island with shows being held in the village of Laborie and the towns of Vieux Fort and Soufriere. All of this goes toward making the St. Lucia Jazz a truly St. Lucian experience for visitors and locals alike.
