Puerto Vallarta Playa Los Muertos beach
"The Beach of the Dead" was so named because of a battle fought a century ago between gold and silver smugglers from the mines of the Rio Cuale and the natives who tried take their stolen booty from them. At the end of the conflict, the beach was strewn with bodies, hence the name. Despite its notorious history, it remains the most popular beach in town. Los Muertos beach offers spectacular sunsets that can be enjoyed from upscale beach restaurants or funky jazz joints with night clubbing along the shore. During the day, the white sand and gentle surf invite sunworshipers to play or take refuge under the many restaurant palapas that dot the beach.

Puerto Vallarta Mismaloya beach
Probably the most well known Puerto Vallarta beach due to the filming of "Night of the Iguana" here in l963, this 500-meter-long beach sits at the very edge of the jungle where the Mismaloya creek meets the sea. Several species of wildlife have been spotted in the hills above the beach, including many different types of birds and land animals such as deer, pumas, jaguars, quails, monkeys and armadillos. The shallow surf makes it a good place to swim, thus it is popular with families. There are jet ski, parasail, and boat rentals available as are water taxis to remote Puerto Vallarta beaches. The original movie set is now a restaurant at the far end of the beach and several palapa-style eateries line the beach offering an array of delights for eating and drinking.

Cabo San Lucas "Dune Beach"
Playa El Medano: "Dune Beach", as it translates, is perhaps the most popular "in-town" beach Cabo. El Medano runs several miles along the Bay of San Lucas from Hotel Hacienda beyond Club Cascadas and is perhaps the safest beach for swimming and other water recreation. On the weekends the beach is very crowded so if you plan to spend the day, go early and find your spot. There are palapa bars and restaurants along the beach and pleanty of venders so you can sun and shop at the same time. Access to this beach is anywhere from Hacienda to Casacadas.

Playa del Amore: "Lovers Beach", as it translates, was voted one of 10 best beaches in all of Mexico by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Playa del Amore lies close to the very tip of Cabo and can only be reached by boat or a very difficult rock climb over rugged headlands. It is perhaps the most photographed area that appears in most ads of Cabo. At low tide you can pass through the famous arch (El Arco)to the Pacific. Swimming is generally safe only on the Sea of Cortex side facing the bay. This is also a popular snorkling area.

Oaxaca - Virgin of Guadalupe Celebration - December 12
These festivities are a national religious gala, commemorating the legendary appearance of Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Mountain. She is the patron saint of Mexico. Celebrating this event is extremely important in Oaxaca. It begins on December 12, with a rendition of "Mañanitas", a classic Mexican birthday song, sung by a group of local singers or bands. During the earliest morning hours, young boys dressed as Juan Diego (the man believed to have witnessed the Virgin’s appearance), along with young girls, dressed in typical Mexican attire, start a pilgrimage, making a floral offering to the Virgin. Catholic residents and visitors alike visit the temple of Guadeloupe during the rest of the day. During the evening, after Mass, there are fireworks, a fairground, and typical food stands that remain open for several more days. It is a popular gala lasting the whole day.

Oaxaca Day of the Dead Festival - November 1-2
Dias de los Muertos -- The Mexican Days of the Dead festival (Nov 1-2) has garnered worldwide attention. It is celebrated across Oaxaca with more enthusiasm than in the rest of Mexico, which says quite a lot. Markets brim with marigolds -- the flower of the underworld -- and every household fills an altar with them and the favorite dishes, drinks, and cigarettes of the deceased. People visit relatives and friends, and anyone who visits is offered food. This is also the time to pay one's respects at the graveyard. Take one of the nocturnal cemetery tours offered around this time. Another common form of celebrating is for young men to dress up in macabre outfits and frolic in the streets in Carnaval-like fashion.

At the end of October, of course, are the festivities surrounding the Day of the Dead. During the past two to three years, wonderful Day of the Dead alter building contests have sprung up and the offerings become more elaborate and sophisticated with each passing year (as do the monetary prizes for the winners). These alters are not only a way of preserving the past, but also a means of encouraging younger generations of Yucatecos to carry their living and relevant heritage forward into the future.
