Los Muertos beach offers spectacular sunsets that can be enjoyed from upscale beach restaurants or funky jazz joints with night clubbing along the shore. Probably the most well known Puerto Vallarta beach due to the filming of "Night of the Iguana" here in l963, this 500-meter-long beach sits at the very edge of the jungle where the Mismaloya creek meets the sea. Several species of wildlife have been spotted in the hills above the beach, including many different types of birds and land animals such as deer, pumas, jaguars, quails, monkeys and armadillos. Puerto Vallarta Boca de Tomatlan Beach

A small seaside village cove that sits at the edge of the jungle, three miles south of Mismaloya, where the mouth or boca of the Tomatlan river meets the bay, hence its name. This quiet fishing village is the source of most of the fish sold in the area. Fleets of small fishing pangas leave each morning from its shores. Water taxis also leave here for the chain of small remote beaches accessible only by boat. A family-owned open-air restaurant serves beach-goers at this secret little beach.

Oaxaca - Virgin of Guadalupe Celebration - December 12

These festivities are a national religious gala, commemorating the legendary appearance of Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Mountain. She is the patron saint of Mexico. Celebrating this event is extremely important in Oaxaca. It begins on December 12, with a rendition of "Mañanitas", a classic Mexican birthday song, sung by a group of local singers or bands. During the earliest morning hours, young boys dressed as Juan Diego (the man believed to have witnessed the Virgin’s appearance), along with young girls, dressed in typical Mexican attire, start a pilgrimage, making a floral offering to the Virgin. Catholic residents and visitors alike visit the temple of Guadeloupe during the rest of the day. During the evening, after Mass, there are fireworks, a fairground, and typical food stands that remain open for several more days. It is a popular gala lasting the whole day.

Oaxaca Day of the Dead Festival - November 1-2

Dias de los Muertos -- The Mexican Days of the Dead festival (Nov 1-2) has garnered worldwide attention. It is celebrated across Oaxaca with more enthusiasm than in the rest of Mexico, which says quite a lot. Markets brim with marigolds -- the flower of the underworld -- and every household fills an altar with them and the favorite dishes, drinks, and cigarettes of the deceased. People visit relatives and friends, and anyone who visits is offered food. This is also the time to pay one's respects at the graveyard. Take one of the nocturnal cemetery tours offered around this time. Another common form of celebrating is for young men to dress up in macabre outfits and frolic in the streets in Carnaval-like fashion.
