Rhodes - Explore Old Town's Rich History

The Old City of Rhodes is surrounded by medieval walls with seven gates: Gate of the Naval Station, Gate of Agios Ioannis, Gate of Agia Ekaterini, Gate of the Apostle Paul, Gate of Amboise, Gate of Agios Athanassios and the Gate of the port.  To enter any of these gates is to enter another world where a handful of Knights were the last Christian holdouts in a part of the world that had become completely dominated bythe Ottoman Turks. The Medieval City was divided into three parts: the northern part included the Acropolis of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master while the southern part include Hora, were the commoners lived. The Jewish Quarter is the third section.

Monemvasia Greece - An Island Rich in History

Monemvasia is located in the southeastern Peloponnese in the prefecture of Laconia, 400 meters from land having been separated from the mainland by an earthquake in 375 A.D.  Today a causeway links the mainland town of Yefira/New Monemvasia to Monemvasia or Kastro (castle). The Kastro is divided into a lower and an upper town. Many ruins of the original 800 houses and only four out of the original forty churches can be found in the lower town. Among them is the Church of the Elkomenos Christ, which is named after a famous icon of Christ given in 1700 to the church by Andreas Likinios, philosopher and chief physician to the ruler of Moldavia, Dimitirs Kandimir. The oldest church is St. Paul’s, which was built in 956, and today houses the museum. Further on, towards the eastern edge of the lower town and closer to the sea is the whitewashed Our Lady of Hrisafittisa, which was built in the sixteenth century.

Naxos, Greece - Beaches

One of the principal glories of Naxos is its long beaches with their crystal- clear water and golden sand.  There is a wide choice of beaches, from those which are only sandy and perhaps have cedar trees growing along the shoreline to those which have pebbles mixed in with the sand, from calm and windless coves to more exposed beaches where the north wind makes wind- surfing a thrilling pleasure.

Naxos Greece - Old Chora and Kastro

Walk the narrow covered streets, with their unexpected dead ends, their twists and turns, their steps, deadlights, corbels and balconies.  In the old town all roads lead to the sea, but they also lead us to the gates of the castle which Marco Sanudi built in 1207. We enter either by the south gate, the "Paraporti", or by the north gate, the "Trani Porta" (strong gate). The Trani Porta and the Portara are undoubtely the two most familiar landmarks of Naxos.
